University ranking holds a certain prominence when it comes to both technical and professional services. This is required by the employers who aim to meet business expectations through the graduates of these respected institutes. Due to globalization and internalization, the governments across the globe are using the rankings to measure the global competitiveness. Education has become one of the top priorities in life due to the emerging economies. Institutional ranking depends on numerous factors and each holds a significant feature. Ranking depends on the volume of research the institute produces per year, the standard of teaching, and the rate of employ ability of graduates, and more. It is not a mystery that university ranking plays a major role during admissions’ decision making process. Rankings are commonly used to create the study destination for the students and help them to narrow down the institutes they are considering to apply in. Students want the potential return of the investment from their degree and they use the ranking of their institute to make sure that employers recognize it. This year the QS World Ranking revealed that some universities of Pakistan have made it to the list. The universities which have managed to secure a place in this prestigious ranking are Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), National University of Science and Technology (NUST), University of Karachi, University of Engineering and Technology (UET), University of Lahore and Quaid-e-Azam University. Recently (UMT) emerge among the top 500 universities in Asia in QS world ranking
Ranking plays a very important part by keeping track of the general performance of institutes in the list; on the other hand, one cannot say the institutes that failed to secure a place in the list are less creditable. Ranking helps the universities to build their reputation and institutional position. And, by having one’s institute ranked as highly as possible does improve the chances of better job prospects, being employed easily and earning preferably more as compared to others. Ranking of an institute can influence national and international collaboration and cooperation and brings positive branding. It will improve the willingness of the others to partner with them and support their membership of academics or professional associations. Although ranking systems are important to keep track of the general performance of the institutes, being part of the ranking system cannot prioritize the importance of one institute over another. At the end of the day, it is all about getting oneself out of the comfort zone. If the institution is helping the students to achieve this goal and indulge in critical thinking, then the students do not need to be worried about the ranking systems whether it is QS World ranking or HEC ranking.
